Not attending the Shinigami Academy had haunted Azerik since he joined the Gotei. He had overcome his lack of Zanjutsu training with shear perseverance, and with Nonko's help he had acquired the use of kidou, but he still had yet to acquire an almost essential combat skill for Shinigami. The Flash Step provided the high speed mobility he needed to keep up with his enemies movements, and would also provide him all sorts of new opportunities for creativity with his attacks. But to get these advantages he would have to first learn to use the ability.
"The overall theory behind the technique is the same as my bracers," he said as he doodled in the dirt with a stick, "so it can't be that hard." Anyone who looked at the doodles would be surprised to find that he was actually doing a series of complex equations. "It works by propelling the user through the air with reiatsu," he said as he scratched his head, "so its like jumping forward almost...except I'm pushing off with the full force of my Spirit energy rather than my physical strength...or is it supposed to be a mixture of both...about 70% energy, 30% strength I should think...which means I have to try and push mainly forward, making it more like the first step of a dash than a jump..."
After about an hour of mumbling to himself and doodling, Azerik was standing with his eyes closed, focusing on what he had to do. Out of no where he would take off running, and skipping every 3rd step, trying to propel himself with Reiatsu. Each time he would do no more than move a few extra inches, but as he continued, he would adjust how much Reiatsu he released, and how focused the release was. After 15 minutes he had managed to go 2 feet with one step, and he was certain he hadn't jumped the distance. Smiling as he realized he was beginning to grasp the basics of the technique, he continued, taking a break every half hour before beginning again. To aid in the push off, he started running toward the walls of the training area, and trying to Shunpo backwards to avoid hitting it. When no more progress could be made from that method, he simply ran in a wide circle, attempting Shunpo whenever he wished to widen the circle. On his third attempt of this method, he moved a full 30 feet, the distance the average Shunpo user was expected to move with a single step. Elated at his success, Azerik tried again, not getting exactly the same result. Undeterred he tried 5 more time, and got it on the 4th and 5th try. Trying two more time to be sure he could repeat the process without failing, Azerik collapsed backwards, lying in the dirt doodles he had made earlier. "Not...so...hard," he said through deep ragged breaths, "who...need...formal training...anyway..."
